Pet Holidays
If you are planning to take a holiday in the UK with your pet you will need to do some research far in advance and choose your holiday venue carefully. Always ask the holiday agent whether they accept animals at the time of booking. Do not just ask whether they accept pets, but be specific about the type of pet as some will not accept certain types of pets, or certain breeds of dog. Some holiday venues may charge a supplement of around £40 per dog per week, and some will allow a maximum number of dogs.
The types of holiday in the UK you may want to consider taking your pet include:
- Camping
- Caravanning
- Holiday cottages
- Narrow boats/barges
If you do not want to take your pet on holiday with you, or circumstances prevent it, you could consider the following for your pet while you are away:
- Getting a friend or member of your family to regularly visit your house to care for and feed your pet.
- Leaving your pet at a friend's house.
- Leaving your pet in kennels/cattery.
- Paying a specialist pet carer or dog walker to look after your pet.
If you are planning to take your pet abroad you will need to research far in advance of the date of travel. For the EU most countries require a microchip and rabies vaccination entered in a pet passport and a veterinary health certificate. A rabies vaccination must be done at least 30 days prior to travel. It is helpful to have your pet up to date with inoculations irrespective of whether the country requires them. If your pet needs to spend any time in the cattery or kennels then current vaccinations are a necessity.
Always make sure you have up to date for your pet before you travel.
