Pet Food

There are so many different types, brands and flavours of food on the market - how do you know what to feed your pet? Here are some useful tips:

  • Talk to other pet owners and your vet to find out what food they recommend. Although be aware that some vets will be 'sponsored' to promote a particular food/brand.

  • When obtaining a pet from a breeder or home, always find out what the animal ate there and introduce a new diet to your animal gradually.

  • Try to vary the food you give your pet. After all, if you ate the same meal day after day you would get bored of it very quickly!

  • Try to give your pet a balanced diet. Find out what your pet needs in terms of protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre, vitamins and minerals and make sure they get what they need.

  • Many pets can eat some of the same foods as humans, E.g. cats can eat chicken and beef, dogs can also eat vegetables, cheese and bananas, and guinea pigs can eat carrots, lettuce and cucumber.

  • Not all human food is suitable for pets. You should not feed pork of any kind to a dog or cat. Dogs should also not eat chocolate, unless it is made specifically for dogs.

  • Be careful not to feed your pet processed human food or take-aways. Just as this kind of food is not considered healthy for humans, neither is it healthy for your pet.

  • Remember that pets also need fresh water available to them at all times.
