A healthy pet is a happy pet. There are a number of preventative measures you can take to keep your pet healthy. These include:

• Feeding your pet a varied, balanced diet and making sure it gets all the nutrients he/she needs.
• Keeping your pet exercised correctly.

Always keep a careful eye on your pet's appearance and behaviour. Some of the following may mean there is a problem and you should seek veterinary advice as soon as possible:

• Loss of appetite, weight loss or gain, or excessive water consumption.
• Difficult, abnormal, or uncontrolled waste elimination.
• Abnormal lumps, limping, or difficulty getting up or lying down.
• Abnormal behaviour, sudden viciousness, or lethargy.
• Excessive head shaking, scratching, licking or biting part of the body.
• Foul breath or excessive tarter deposits on teeth.
• Dandruff, loss of hair, open sores, or a ragged or dull coat.

Try to talk to other owners of the same pet/breed as you and make sure you read books about your pet so you know what the common ailments might be for your specific pet.
