Going to the Vets
As soon as you have acquired a new pet you should book in for an appointment at a veterinary surgery. Your vet will give the pet a check up and any vaccinations that may be needed. If you have bought your pet from a breeder some will offer a guarantee of good health, and kittens and puppies should not be allowed to mix with other animals until they have been vaccinated.
When choosing a vet one of the most important issues to consider is their location in relation to where you live. You must be able to make it to the surgery quickly in case of emergency. But it is also important that you can get on with your veterinary surgeon as you are likely to be working with them for the duration of your pet's life.
To transport your pet to the vets you will need a suitable carry case or crate if the animal is small, or a way to transport them by vehicle if they are big. If your animal is reluctant to go in its crate try using treats or toys as an incentive and praise your pet for good behaviour.
Do be aware that some surgeries are 'sponsored' to promote certain brands of pet food. Just because your vet recommends it does not mean it is the best for your pet.
