Common Pet Illnesses

Some pet illnesses are specific to a particular type or breed of pet. There are also some common ailments that can affect a number of different animals. The most common being:

  • Cancer - can affect pets in the same way as humans in the form of skin cancer, breast cancer, bone cancer etc. Cancer is common in pets and the risk increases with the age of the animal.
  • Lyme disease - an infectious disease spread by a tick and treated by antibiotics. There are a variety of symptoms, usually including fever and loss of appetite.
  • Parasites - common in the form of internal and external, and include fleas, mites and worms. Most are straight forward for your vet to treat.
  • Rabies - mainly occurs in wild animals outside the UK.
  • Toxoplasmosis - is a disease caused by a parasite. It is carried by cats and can be passed on to humans. It can be particularly dangerous if passed on to a pregnant woman, so it is wise for them to take extra care around cat litter.
  • Heart disease - mostly affects dogs.
  • Heartworm - mostly affects dogs.

Try to talk to owners of the same breed as you, read books specific to your breed, as they will detail illnesses specific to your pet, and seek advice from your veterinarian if you are ever unsure about the health of your pet.
